Ilissa Howard is a US trained psychotherapist and licensed Social Worker providing counselling services to teenagers and adults. She takes a modern, solution-based approach to help clients identify and work towards their personal goals. She utilizes a combination of evidence-based interventions to treat clients to are experiencing various forms of anxiety, depression, grief and loss, challenges in relationships, anger issues, mood instability, uncontrollable worry, self-criticism, addiction and who might be feeling stuck in their lives.

Before becoming a psychotherapist, Ilissa worked in the corporate world for over 20 years. This experience gave her valuable insight, and she is particularly adept at supporting clients who face work related stress, challenges with bosses and employees, burnout, transitioning back to work after having kids or taking time off or are considering a career change.

Ilissa has been an expat for 13 years and is familiar with and able to support cultural transitions, cross cultural relationships, being far away from family, loneliness and isolation as well as other associated challenges. As a mother of 2 young children, she is also able to help clients navigate the challenges and balancing act that is motherhood (especially new mothers.)

Ilissa believes in empowering clients and helping them feel in control of their emotions and lives. This is one of reasons she employs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) specifically for anxiety and depression to give clients the tools they need to alter their thinking and support themselves outside of therapy. She was fortunate enough to study Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT) with the founder of the intervention. CGT is a short-term therapy that has the strongest success rate of any grief treatment in the world. She also studied Motivational Interviewing (MI) with a founder of the technique. MI is a directive, client-centered approach for moving past ambivalence and eliciting change. Ilissa has also completed Levels I and II of the Gottman Method, a couple’s therapy method that relies on research-based interventions. In addition, she utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), elements of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Narrative Therapy. She obtained her Master’s in Clinical Social Work at Columbia University in New York City.
