Morning sickness

Morning sickness is common during pregnancy, particularly the first trimester, due to your changing hormones.

Though it’s called morning sickness, nausea in pregnancy can affect you throughout the day and night.

If you’re often sick more than three times a day, you might have hyperemesis gravidarum, and should check with your healthcare practitioner. Hyperemesis gravidarum can cause weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration.

Morning sickness is of particular concern if you have diabetes or gestational diabetes, as it can make it hard to keep your blood glucose at a sufficient level.

From naturopathy to acupuncture, our practitioners use natural treatments that are safe for both you and your baby to balance hormonal health and alleviate morning sickness.

Nausea and vomiting, typically in the morning, but may occur at any time of the day.

Vomiting usually starts in the first trimester between weeks 4 and 8, and goes away between weeks 16 and 18 - though it can last throughout your pregnancy.

Feeling dizzy and lightheaded in the morning.

Sensitivity to smells and tastes.

Loss of your appetite.

Pregnancy - particularly the first trimester.

Unknown food intolerances and gut health.

Men can also experience sympathetic pregnancy, which includes morning sickness. This may be informed by hormonal and mental health factors.

Morning sickness can also occur outside of pregnancy, and may be caused by low blood sugar, medications and other conditions.

Stress doesn’t cause morning sickness, but it can make symptoms worse.

Our naturopaths can give nutritional recommendations to support morning sickness. They can also bolster gut health which may be affecting your condition. If they suspect an unknown food intolerance may be causing nausea or vomiting, they can send you for testing to confirm.

Acupuncture also provides relief for morning sickness. Our acupuncturists restore healthy flow of qi to balance your hormones and alleviate symptoms.

If stress is worsening your morning sickness, you may find it helpful to talk to one of our counsellors or psychologists.
