Pain

Pain is a message from your body to your brain, signalling that there’s something wrong. If you’re experiencing pain, it’s important to listen – but it can be hard to know how to respond.

Our practitioners decode messages of pain from your body – they’re able to diagnose conditions, and recommend a course of action to alleviate the source of your pain.

What types of pain are there?

Acute pain has an inciting event, like an injury from sports, twisting your ankle, or cutting your finger. This type of pain dissipates within a relatively short period of time – from minutes (think stubbing your toe) to months (sprains or strains).

Chronic pain lasts longer than three months. It might be caused by injury, or associated with a health condition – but it may also start with no apparent cause.

Neuropathic pain originates from nervous system damage.

Nociceptive pain is felt in your tissues, which includes muscles, bones, tendons and organs.

Your pain can fall into multiple categories. Stubbing your toe is an example of both acute and nociceptive pain.

You might be confused about what’s causing your pain – and perhaps traditional doctors are too.

Allergies, food intolerances, hormonal health and nutritional imbalances are all invisible causes of pain.

Holistic medicine combines testing with the wisdom of natural medicine to unearth the cause and reveal the correct treatment path.

We recognise that pain doesn’t exist solely within the physical body. Emotional pain, stress and depression can all manifest as physical pain.

While it may feel intuitive to move as little as possible when you’re experiencing pain, the approach to healing varies depending on cause.

Rest periods are often useful, but once you’re past the acute stage, working the area will increase circulation, feeding it with blood, oxygen and nutrients to improve your physical health.

It’s important to do this supported– with exercises designed to strengthen the area and the proper form.

Whatever the physical cause of your pain – from pregnancy, to injury, our osteopaths work with you to treat symptoms at their root cause.

When assessing recent injuries, our osteopaths look for areas of weakness, taking historic injuries into account. They’ll work with you to rebuild strength and restore your full range of mobility.

Osteopathy, particularly cranial osteopathy is useful in treating pain related to nervous system issues.

Unsure what’s causing your pain? Our naturopaths use modern diagnostics to piece together the puzzle of your pain. From digestive function, to allergies and intolerances, our naturopaths interrogate the possible causes to find a clear treatment path to alleviate your symptoms.

Our counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists offer a safe space for you to explore mental health issues that could be causing you physical pain. Feelings of grief or loss caused by physical pain are welcomed for exploration.

Acupuncture is proven to release natural painkillers and relieve physical discomfort. Benefits don’t end when treatment does either – studies show they can continue a year post-treatment.
