Vaginal health

Just like your gut, your vagina has a microbiome - a balance of good and bad bacteria. A healthy balance of bacteria protects your intimate health.

Vaginal pH is also key - and can become imbalanced by soaps, fragrances and tight or synthetic clothing. A healthy vaginal pH is slightly acidic, to protect against bad bacteria.

Diet. Mental health. Your exposure to toxins. Your vaginal health is influenced by many factors.

Discussing your vaginal health can be sensitive. Our naturopaths handle each stage with care and empathy, while finding the hidden factors upsetting your vaginal health.

Discomfort - itching, burning, soreness and inflammation.

Discharge is a hallmark of vaginal health - healthy discharge will change throughout your menstrual cycle. It may vary from egg white consistency to more opaque and creamy. Strong smelling, unusually coloured, lumpy or bloody discharge (unless directly before menstruation) may be an indication of an unhappy vagina.

Needing to pee a lot. Recurrent UTIs can be a sign of an unhealthy vaginal microbiome.

Hormonal changes throughout your menstrual cycle, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding and menopause.

Diets high in sugar - which feed yeasts that cause thrush.

Medications, particularly antibiotics can kill off good bacteria in the vaginal microbiome.

Fragranced soaps and vaginal douching (washing out the inside of the vagina).

Exposure to toxins.

Poor gut health can in turn affect the vaginal microbiome, increasing levels of bad bacteria.

Your mental health can affect hormone levels, which in turn affect vaginal health. Stress can also decrease natural lubrication.

Our naturopaths talk through any symptoms you’re experiencing, as well as your lifestyle, to get a full picture of your health and what may be affecting your vaginal health.

Using medical tests, they can assess your vaginal microbiome - as well as any contributing factors, like your hormonal health and gut health.

They’ll create a treatment plan unique to you, to alleviate your symptoms and restore vaginal health. This might include high quality probiotics to balance your vaginal and gut microbiome; supplements to support detox; or referral to our mental health services to alleviate anxiety and stress.

We’ll also recommend lifestyle changes that may be impacting your intimate health.
